This place blows my mind! Vegan, gluten free and amazing! I've had the Mexican bowl, smoothies, iced coffee, the Reuben and much more here! I always leave satisfyingly full and feeling great! Helpful and educated staff, great music and a sweet location. Awesome lunch date place and they do carry out too!

I love menus. Not just the physical appearance but the words, descriptions and creativity of ingredients. Everything about them makes me happy. In the case of New World Cafe, it's their creative ingredient combinations that won me over. For instance, unique and seasonal soups like creamy beet with grapefruit juice or to-die-for beverages like made-from-scratch strawberry rhubarb lemonade. **I cannot begin to tell you how delicious this beverage was. They have wifi so I'd venture to say this place would make a healthier alternative to hanging out at the coffee shop for an hour or two. (the high top seating at the window wouldn't hurt either). New World Cafe is the holy land for those of us who love veggies. The menu is 100% vegetarian and innovative. My dining companion ordered the colorful and tasty falafel sandwich served with the salad of the day while I opted for the popular Mexican bowl with quinoa, zucchini, seeds, sauce(?), broccoli, veggies and veggies. Despite my less-than-excellent description, it was quite tasty. I'm confident I would have been satisfied with anything on the menu. As for dessert, the vegan options are aplenty! I'm jealous that Indy doesn't have such a veggie-friendly option like this in the heart of our downtown.

I thought the flavors were great, but the portions were a little small for the price you pay. Tastes very fresh, but I definitely was not full after eating here.

Let me preface this by saying that I am an avid meat eater (although I am going through a vegan phase right now). I enjoy my brazilian barbecue...but I digress I wasn't expecting much here, i was expecting a reheated boca burger on a dry crumbly bun. Wow was I wrong! Their burger was tremendously flavorful and the bun was warm and toasted and served with a great side salad with cashew dressing. I think that the reason their "burger" is so good is that it doesn't try to be meat...because let's face it nothing can really approximate meat other than meat. But their burger is packed full of flavor and seemed to be house made. My son had their "reuben" and he raved about the sandwich as well. the only thing that wasn't so great was parking...not necessarily the restaurants fault but if they had some kind of change machine for parking they would get a lot more business i think.

Vegan food in Des Moines! I'm not even vegan and this was one of my favorite meals during my last trip to DSM. I ordered The Bowl (such a serious name!) and it came with grains, beans, raw veggies, pickled veggies, sprouts and tahini miso sauce and I practically licked the bowl clean. The interior is small and cafe-like which makes it cozy. They have a small-ish menu, but everything that I saw being served looked really great and even the drinks were lovely. I can see why New World is so popular and I'd definitely head back on my next trip to Des Moines!

When I told people I went to a vegan restaurant in Des Moines they looked at me shocked. Place is awesome. I could eat here every week. Everything I had was awesome. Had some kind of lemonade drink, a sandwich and a soup. It all was really damn good. And of course, super healthy tasting. These people really understand how to make vegan food taste amazing. Even if you're not a vegan/vegetarian, I really recommend you give this place a try.

Amazing vegan food without any processed bs. It gets a bit crowded, but good atmosphere. Closing July 3rd though

First time at a vegan restaurant. While I'm not considering going vegan, the Mexican Bowl was fantastic in visual appeal as well as taste. I was a bit confused by the menu written in chalk. I felt like I was in a foreign restaurant so I went with the Mexican Bowl based on a photo from another review. Location was nice; in walking distance to anywhere you may want to visit. My only real complaint is how loud it was with the kitchen separated from the dining area by a half wall.

Probably the foremost (and complete) vegan restaurant in Des Moines. Everything is fresh, healthy, and tasty! The menu changes with the seasons so you can always try something new. They also make great smoothies. A pretty good location in the East Village.

This makes a Vegan very happy! It's always nice to go into a eatery and not have to worry about what you are ordering! Everything on this menu is Vegan and every meal I have had here has been delish! I love the Mexian bowl, which is a bowl of veggies over rice with mexican flavors and in store made vegan cheese drizzled on top! Top notch. I also love the grilled cheese and the salads are wonderful too. If your looking to eat a huge meal you might want to get a desert here, cause the portions are not huge but they are perfect for a healthy lunch or quick bite before hitting the town. No alcohol served here, but they do make great coffees and smoothies. This is quickly turning into a place I bring friends from out of town.

Just went to New World Cafe for my first time during lunch and I'm a huge fan already. Kind of disappointed to see a few terrible reviews on here. Everyone's experience is different, I guess. Here's mine. The staff was friendly and helpful when I asked for a recommendation. My food was delivered quickly (around five minutes after my order) by a very friendly man who told me to enjoy my meal. I had the taco burger (mushroom-bean grain patty / cilantro-lime cabbage / green herb salsa / "sour cream" / pumpkin seed spread / lettuce / onion / sprouted bun) and it came with a side salad that was topped with a diverse mix of greens, celery, seeds, etc. The dressing was light and tangy, really unique. The taco burger was bursting with flavor and texture. I especially loved the green herb salsa, which was plentiful with a taste that didn't overwhelm, only enhance, the burger. The "sour cream" was more of a dressing, but it had a much more complex taste than actual sour cream. The elements of this burger really worked well together. The bread was substantial and not too dry and the mushroom-bean patty was thick and tender inside, crunchy outside, with a subtle taco flavor. Also, it was huge and incredibly filling. There is a self-service water station and a can for compost. This place is small and I appreciated the clean and simple look. For a new restaurant, I was impressed by the staff and definitely by the food. I'll be back and I will bring others.

Thank God for this restaurant. I'm a picky eater (i eat healthy). When i had to go to des Moines for a family thing, i thought i would starve. Not so. Food that will heal the body and satiate the appetite, plus the staff is cool and the food is nom nom nom! Thanks new world cafe!

The menu changes a lot, so it's hard for the food to become boring. The food has never been anything other than great. The owners and staff are awesome and really nice. Cannot recommend enough. Oh, and my biggest pet peeve of vegan/vegetarian restaurants is non-vegan/vegetarian customers who think that vegan/vegetarian restaurants should cater to their lifestyle and serve meat. The food here should not scare away non-vegan/vegetarians. In fact, I dare to say the food here is better than most non-vegan/vegetarian restaurants.

Headed here for dinner last night after a day at the State Fair. It is my second visit and it gets better every time I come. It is better than mist vegan cafes I have visited. Their seasonally adjusted menu is always changing so you can be sure its fresh and in season. I had the falafel and my wife the Mexican bowl. Both were outstanding. We also tried the limeade and coffee shake... Divine! Recommend for vegans and non vegans alike!

Passing by Des Moines on a road trip, decided to check for vegan in the area. What a great find. Stopped on the way out and again on the return. Fortunately, the stops were two different weeks so we got to try new things. Already looking forward to coming back.

Delicious food (vegan, obviously) made with fresh local ingredients. They also have juices, shakes, and coffee. I am blown away by the flavor every time I come here. If you think vegan food is boring and bland stop in to New World and your taste buds will tell you otherwise! There is limited seating, but even when it's busy we've been able to find a spot with minimal waiting.

Amazing cafe! Great for lunch and/or to have coffee. For my first time here, I tried the pizza burger: white bean + red pepper patty, tomato basil jam, cashew herb spread, olive-caper relish, and spinach on a 5 grain wheat bun for $9.50 -- delicious and worth it! Followed that up with a large house chai tea with coconut milk for $4. Very, very good. Not too sweet, which is great. The only minor snag I encountered was with the Internet. The wifi appeared to be working, but I lost my connection on both my MacBook and iPhone. Android/Microsoft conspiracy? :P The artwork and posters here are creative and full of positive humanism to the max. Couldn't help but smile seeing a grandmother and mom bring their two young boys in, as this place sends a powerful, hopeful message. Consider New World Cafe a must visit!

  • Sami V.

I was so excited when Adam announced New World was opening. It's a small space that is kept very tidy and the staff is always friendly and smiley. I've been here so many times and we're even "members". My absolute favorite thing they have is the Mac n chz (gluten free, cuz the pasta is so gooood). Close second is the Mexican bowl. Really haven't had too many disappointing times here and I hope they keep re-inventing the menu options. Oh, I almost forgot. Their juices are superb! Perfectly done, always.

I've only had a fresh smoothie from here, but it was DELICIOUS! I had the sunset smoothie, which was a perfect mix of fruits and vegetables. It not only looked beautiful but tasted beautiful as well!! I can't wait to come back and actually try the food!

The A.L.T. is AMAZING. Period. Like, I didn't even know a samwich without meat could tasty so amazing, juicy, flavorful and tasty!!!!!! Also, the coconut shake and pecan shake are just wonderful. I went Vegan last month and this place makes me feel so proud!

This place is in my top 5 favorite vegan/gluten free restaurants!! Super friendly service and fairly quick to receive our meals!! I ordered the falafel burger and my fiancé ordered the Mexican burger. Both of them were amazing! Great flavor and enough to fill us both up. We grabbed the hot sauce thinking that we would need it to spicy things up, but ended up finishing our meals without it. (That's a rare thing for both of us since we LOVE hot sauce.) If you are vegan or not vegan, try this place! They will not disappoint!!

Quick, delicious, vegan, and super fresh! The menu changes seasonally but if you see the Mexican bowl, try it!

I almost decided not to review this place until someone else had, because I'll be setting the star rating on my own otherwise... and I'm only giving it 3 stars. That might look bad to some people, but this place wasn't exactly bad. It just wasn't awesome. Also, that's only my opinion. The restaurant is clean and simple; there isn't a lot on the walls, and the tables and chairs are relatively plain. It was all cute and hipstery in its own way. Also, I guess they are open for juice and smoothies before they start serving lunch, so that's cool. That means you can stop by for a quick healthy breakfast before work if you hang out around here. I don't live around here, though, and I didn't try their juice... Which is relevant to you only because I can't review it. Anyhow, I ordered some vegan mac and cheese. I can't eat macaroni and cheese at regular restaurants (cheese is not vegetarian), so being able to order it was kind of novel for me. Unfortunately that was about the extent of my enjoyment of the dish. I really feel bad for saying this, but it smelled kind of like my dog after he's dried off a little from being wet outside, and it kind of tasted how it smelled. Dan tried it, and he wasn't able to eat any more than one bite. I feel like there might be people who would really like it, but I was not one of them. It's not something I'd ever eat again. Dan ordered a quinoa salad, and that was actually pretty good. I suppose the food, then, is just hit or miss. The service was okay. They were friendly and helpful, but not overly so. It seems like this might be a relatively new restaurant, so a lot might change between this visit and my next, but I'd definitely like to give it a second go to form a more solid opinion of the food. I hope other people will try it out.

where were you when I moved to Des Moines thirteen years ago?? I think I might still be a vegetarian had you been! It's high time Des Moines gets a vegan restaurant of this caliber. I eat here very regularly, often taking my order to go. Their menu changes weekly to enable the use of the freshest, in-season ingredients. I look their current menu up on-line, call my order in, and go pick up. My "go-to"orders are the Bowl and the Mexican Bowl, though I am partial to many of their salads too. The combination of healthy grains and fresh vegetables, tasty sauces, and other ingredients always leave me feeling full, yet energized. Great music in the background too. I discovered "Black Mountain" thanks to New World.

We are so crazy for this place. We would eat here every day if we could. The food is incredibly flavorful and filling. I think one of the most difficult things about vegan cooking is hitting all of those savory notes juuust right. My meat-eating partner was totally satisfied with his meals here. We've been back a few times, and he has no protests at all about going to a vegan restaurant after trying this place. If anything, the food here is a good case for conversion. The prices are also very reasonable. When we went there for the first time we were expecting to pay a premium--nut cheeses and interesting vegan mayonnaise can require some special ingredients! This was not the case! We basically paid exactly what we would expect to pay (if not less) for any local diner or cafe that served animal products. We also felt satisfied that many of the produce they were using was in-season and not particularly "exotic", so the food was not only delicious but more sustainable and understandable than we expected. The staff was friendly and prompt. We were just blown away each time we went there. The scrambles were savory and full of texture. The burger had so many flavors (and was a brilliant use of buckwheat!)! The grilled chickpea sandwich was like egg salad without any gross eggy flavors! The tacos had this sauce beyond description or compare! Not to mention the absolutely delicious juices. Don't miss the ginger lemonade!

Great place for vegans! But if you're not vegan don't let that scare you away. There's something for everyone here. It's a very small space. I wouldn't recommend trying to fit any groups larger than 4. You can also grab carry out if you don't want to stay. Lots of fresh pressed juices and drinks to order as well. Get the Mac and cheese whenever it's available. It delicious!

I was really surprised by this place. I was asked to come here for a brunch date and I wasn't sure if I would really like vegan food but I was totally wrong. I got one of their breakfast bowls (don't know the name) but I was totally blown away by how good it was. Even the vegan cheese tasted like cheese. Definitely a good restaurant that also does their own smoothies and juice. Can't wait to try it again!

  • Anthony S.

This was my first Vegan experience and the food itself wasn't too bad. The mac'n'cheese was decent and better than I expected. The soup I had tasted like water with a tomato squeezed into it. It's a small restaurant and seems to be clean. Not much for an atmosphere. The water was warm and not served with ice. You have to clean up your own table after you're done and the only dish bin is on the floor under a table so you have to kneel down to get to it. The menu is very small so do not come here expecting a large variety of choices.

This is a delightful little restaurant in East Village. I ordered the ATL which was a flavorful sandwich with bacon flavored mushroom slices and tomatoes. I am anxious to go again and try more on their menu. I think some good organic beers and wines would be a nice edition. I was impressed with the clean, crisp and uncluttered decor. It is wonderful to have a great vegetarian option in Des Moines.

My husband and I stopped here for lunch on our way back to Chicago. We ordered the A.L.T., Rueben, and Mac 'n cheese. All items were delicious and the portions so generous we both stopped a couple of bites short of finishing. It's hard to find really good vegan comfort food, but New World Cafe nailed it. A couple of comments: read the menu online before you go otherwise you'll have to read teeny letters on a tiny blackboard. Also, I thought the decor was amateurish and a bit juvenile.

I came here for lunch around 12:30 on a Friday. It was pretty busy but my friend and I found a place to sit. The food came quick. I ordered the Sun dried Tomato Parsnip soup and the Mexican bowl. Both are very good, however I should have went with one or the other- both left me overly full. The Mexican Bowl is very filling and very tasty. My friend ordered the Pizza Burger and raved about it. She couldn't believe how much flavor it had :) we both bought a brownie, they were damn good! I loved the food, I love the concept, and I love supporting local establishments. I will be back :)

Who knew that one of the best vegan restaurants in the U.S. is in Des Moines, IA? New World Cafe is easily in my top three and makes me wish I had reason to pass through DM more frequently. It's been a few months since I've been there, but I haven't forgotten how delicious the mac-and-cheez is. Efforts to mimic dairy-based dishes so often go wrong, but New World knocks it out of the park on the M&C. On our last visit my husband had a grilled sandwich and we shared a Nutty Banana smoothie, and both were excellent. The food is reasonably priced considering that it is all homemade. What a refreshing change to be able to dine out and not wonder if there is dairy or egg lurking in the food, and to know that everything you order will be delicious! If you are traveling anywhere near Des Moines, swing through on I-235 and check this place out.

I have been here twice in twelve hours so I think I like the place. Thus far, I have had the black bean hummus sandwich and the breakfast tacos for brunch. Both were absolutely divine and I don't hand out stars lightly. Each visit I had the pecan shake and, let me tell you, it needs to get permanently added to the menu as it was well worth the $7. The only downside is that the food is a bit pricy, which is typical of vegan/vegetarian/raw food establishments and I will never understand why ( considering you pay MORE for food with less in it) but I will always complain about it :-) Now, the final point: the business model is outstanding!! What other restaurant around here allows people to volunteer for free food or has an item on the menu every day where you donate whatever you can afford? Exactly. How can you NOT support this business?

Hallelujah for a vegan restaurant in Des Moines! I've been pleased with several meals I've ordered here, including a couple different veggie burger variations, "The Bowl" and the black bean hummus sandwich. The smoothies are delightful, too. Don't be scared off by the "hippie" vibe (you compost your leftovers)...I've brought meat-lovers here and they were satisfied by the portions and flavors. It's neat that the menu changes each week based on customer feedback and ingredient availability, and I'm excited to try the new Saturday brunch! My main gripe is with the hours. I've arrived a couple times during periods when they were previously open to find them closed. With such tasty, nutritious food, I'd be there much more often if they had a wider range of open days/times!

My wife and I went for the first time today and were very impressed. The avocado lettuce and tomato sandwich she had was wonderful, as were my breakfast tacos. Everything was very fresh ,delicious and we had plenty to eat. She got a citrus smoothie and we shared it cuz it was so good. Prices were reasonable and the quality of food was easily worth it. Great art work too, of the food consciousness raising variety. We will be back and bring family/friends. Well done!

Being a vegetarian for the last 20yrs I have found many hits and many misses when it comes to vegan restaurants. But this cafe was definitely a hit. I went last Monday afternoon and ordered the follwing; overnight detox (juice), coffee (latte), Mexican bowl, mac and cheese and the spinach salad. Not one of these items was a disappointment. Everything was deliciously, bursting with its own fresh flavor and texture. My partner (who is not a vegetarian) and I devoured every last bite/sip. The staff was helpful and welcoming. The cafe was clean and tidy. Being from northern California, this cafe was a warm welcoming experience.

  • JC C.

The food was really good. My husband had the pizza burger and a chocolate shake and I had the spicy black bean hummus sandwich and a pumpkin chai latte. My sandwich had an awesome "cheesy" sauce! It was about $30 total. The food came out really quickly. The side salad was on the smaller side but the dressing was pretty good. The staff was nice. They compost and recycle which was nice to see. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for tasty vegan food in a casual, hip setting.

We stumbled upon this gem while visiting Des Moines. I have to say I am still thinking about it and wishing that there was something comparable near Chicago. The food and the concept are both unique and approachable. We tried the chickpea sandwich, the ALT, and the Mexican bowl, kale salad. Everything we tried was fresh, yummy, and satisfying. The vibe is wholesome and real. We loved the concept of composting the left over food and using local and sustainable ingredients. There is also dish that is donation based. I recommend New World Cafe to non-vegetarians, vegetarians, and vegans alike.

I am a 30 year vegetarian, not a vegan, but this restaurant inspires me to be vegan. I was so pleased with the food and the atmosphere here, and it surprises me to read negative reviews. Every time I've been to New World I've been treated with kindness and friendly service. The food is really the star here, and everything I try becomes my new favorite. The curry burger was so flavorful and satisfying--I think avowed omnivores would even enjoy it and not feel deprived. The Mexican bowl may be the best dish on earth -- a beautiful combination of flavors and textures, and just incredibly delicious. I like the low-key atmosphere, and the commitment to local and healthy ingredients. They also offer a donation item each day--you pay what you can afford. Their commitment to being a contributing member of our community is refreshing. Sometimes the place is very busy, so space is at a premium. But believe me, it's worth waiting or eating at the counter. You must be a very spoiled or entitled human to be so annoyed with having to sit at the counter that you would demand your money back, as one reviewer did, and then leave. Grow up! The general atmosphere here is that of cooperation--if you're not willing to bus your own dishes, or to be accommodating to others, maybe you should go somewhere else. I highly recommend New World Cafe to everyone including non-vegetarians! The food is so good it might even convert you. And don't forget to try their coffee and dessert options, too.

I love vegan food and was thrilled to hear that Des Moines was getting a new vegan spot. The food was fine, but it is disconcerting to see so many 5 star reviews when there is a clear lack of customer service. I can only suspect that the reviewers are somehow related to the owners? Hours should be consistent. Period. As someone who is from Des Moines, but lives in Chicago I am unclear as to how this place makes enough money to stay open. I have had too many sad instances where my family wanted to try and go here, but oddly they were unapologetically closed. I sincerely hope others heighten their expectations of customer service. It may be unique to be a vegan restaurant in Des Moines, but it certainly doesn't make it flawless.

Wonderful restaurant!!!!! The menu is refreshing and exciting. The people working there are delightful and look genuinely happy to be there. This is how food should be. Don't leave Des Moines without eating here. I wish there were more of these types of restaurants around Iowa.

I used to love this place. I used to eat here at least 3 times a week. Now it seems they gone up in prices and the quality of food has gone down. They have added a bunch of new people to the staff. I just don't the feel the love in the food as when it first opened.

My coworker noticed New World Cafe one day, and suggested we try it for lunch. He and I are the only two adventurous palates in our office, so we often try new places together. It was a four block walk from our office, so we didn't drive. There was a large parking lot just across the road from the restaurant, so I imagine parking would not be a problem. They also have a bike rack out front, and three or four bikes were parked there. Inside, the place was clean and minimalist, with a coffee shop, hipster feel to it. There was nice, new age-y music playing, and the atmosphere was relaxing. The cashier was pleasant and smiled at us, and was ready to take our order as soon as we decided what we wanted. We both ordered the quinoa burger, with came with a side salad. The offer cold water for free, so we both went with that rather than a juice, coffee or tea. The food was executed well. The salad, notably, had an interesting curry dressing, with raisins, spring greens, onions, and what I believe were apples. The curry dressing was unusual and daring, and very, very good. The sandwich was well made, with a whole grain bun, wasabi mayonnaise, greens, and an unidentified sauce. It was delicious and easy to eat. We will definitely return. I took off one star because other than the cashier, many of the employees looked tired or unhappy.

New World Cafe is an Iowan vegan oasis--and you thought it couldn't done. Best vegan cheese sauce I've ever had, and eating under the technicolor Liberation poster made my day complete. I'll definitely be back.

  • Kate B.

The food here is excellent and I've really been excited about the vegan option in DSM! The prices are very reasonable and I like the ever changing menu. They need to figure out their hours as I've been waiting outside multiple times to find the hours had changed and I can't keep up. I also prefer to get my food and juice to-go as it has kind of a pretentious atmosphere with stressed employees, not unlike other vegan places. Go to enjoy the food, but take it to your desk.

Good food and bad atmosphere. Staff acted depressed and annoyed. It was crazy loud as people banged around in the kitchen. Staff wasn't exactly rude but my visit was jarring and unwelcoming.
